"I'M CALLING WHERE YOU BELONG"

The most awaited of the days is finally here! Meet  Ten Tonnes, the artist who first inspired the birth of The Musical Expedition.

Hello navigators! Today is the day! A special one for us, indeed. You see, after seeing a live performance from a certain artist, the idea to create The Musical Expedition came up. After toying with the idea for a while and developing it better, our website was finally out. If you want to learn more about us, check the About Us section!

When I first heard “Lucy”, I remember thinking how great this song was and how much I wanted that everyone else listened to it. From this point on, I started questioning myself as to why it wasn’t a huge success yet, which led me to also question “why most of the songs I love aren’t popular yet, even though they are brilliant?”. Since then, I’ve been thinking in effective ways to try to help aspiring, upcoming and artists in general which are out there, being brave, following their dreams and outstandingly sound-tracking our lives while doing that, to get the recognition and have the share of the spotlight they deserve.

As he was the source inspiration for all this thinking to happen and come to life, becoming what it is today, we considered for a while making him the first artist featured here. However, I wanted to write about him in a special and meaningful occasion. So, Ladies and Gentlemen, to celebrate the 10th post of our website (how time passes by fast!) and to start the year with the right foot, I present you our first artist of 2018: TEN TONNES!

We always try to keep things the most professional and concise that is possible around here, but NOT TODAY FOLKS, today A FAN WAS RELEASED, so sit tight!

Ten (Awesome) Tonnes, is also known as Ethan Barnett. His musical endeavors started really early as he grew up in a house filled with musical instruments and songs being played around (by his father and the radio). At the age of 9, he started learning to play the drums but didn’t enjoy it that much, which made him five years later give the guitar a try and never look back.

Ethan started studying Music Production as a bachelor’s degree, hoping it would give him more opportunities to perform. Accordingly to some interviews, he didn’t get any, so, he got back to his hometown, Hertfordshire, dropped out of college and started playing at open mic nights. As time went by, the once “super-shy” boy became more confident and developed his songwriting skills.

In 2016, he released his first EP, called “Lucy”, with the pieces: “Stop”, “Subtle Changes” and the also named “Lucy”. Lucy is a strong debut EP, filled with personality and that gives the listeners a taste of the direction that he’s conducting his work to.

He’s only 21 years old but has already caught the attention of important radio stations such as BBC Radio 1. He has also already played in many festivals such as Reading Festival and Dot-to-Dot.

One of the things I like most about Ten is that, although in many interviews he says he hasn’t chosen his name for any particular reason, just to be different, he was really fortunate in his choice, picking not only a cool name but a catchy one that seems to really suit his personality on stage.

Another thing special about him is his melodies. The lyrics of his songs are good, and to be honest, can be better, but their instrumental accompaniment is spot on. Innovative but with clear influences of the 70’s and 80’s, it’s like he creates original music but that somehow brings us back to another era.

And this is something his tunes, in general, have in common: distinctive sounds. His musical style has an indie vibe, especially on his first EP. The second one, “Born to Lose” has a much stronger classic rock feel to it. Even so, in both of them, we experience creative and unexpected sounds, which shows us that besides singer-songwriter he’s also a great instrumentalist with a deep sensitivity for melodic tunes.

If you like The Kooks, you’ll love him, especially on Lucy. This was what attracted me to listen to his music in the first place, the similarity of his voice and Luke Pritchard’s, so, here’s a recommendation for you too, Kooks’ fans, I’ve got your back!

Have I fangirled much? I hope not. And if I have, please forgive me. To help you do that, check his YouTube Channel: Ten Tonnes and his website. After listening to 10 minutes of his work, I guarantee that next time, you’ll jump all around the place with me.

So captains, what did you think of our week’s trip? Have suggestions? Questions? You already know the drill, comment on the section below or message us through @themusicalexpedition (Instagram) or The Musical Expedition (Facebook).
