IS SLEEPING BEAUTY... NORWEGIAN?

As the fairy tale tells us, Aurora was a princess known for her kindness, beauty, and niceness. She slept for 100 years, due to a terrible spell cast against her. Though she and our Artist of the Week may share a name and some of those qualities, the Norwegian Aurora definitely hasn’t slept for a century.

According to some online resources, Aurora was born on 15th June of 1996 in Stavanger, Norway. She self-taught herself piano by the age of 6, and started writing lyrics by the age of 9, when she had better knowledge of the English language.

In some interviews, Aurora confessed she is sensitive and emotional, so writing stories filled with feelings have always been a great way to express herself.

Although her career may have started non-intentionally, when she uploaded a song on the Norwegian Soundcloud, as a gift for her parents, Aurora is here to stay. The music video for her song “Runaway” with almost 30 million views on YouTube is filled with everything we like most: originality and expression.

Corporal expression, facial expression, musical expression. Aurora shows us she’s a complete artist with a lot to offer and we, at The Musical Expedition, are not the only ones who think so. Besides playing at The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, The Howard Stern Show and The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Aurora performed also at important festivals such as Way Out West and in 2015 was invited by John Lewis to sing their Christmas’s advert, a cover of the song Half The World Away originally by Oasis.

Aurora has released an EP called Running With The Wolves (2015) and her first album All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend (2016) both under the label Decca Records.

Magical Inspirations

AURORA usually describes her songs as dark-pop, which makes sense: a sweet face singing powerful, emotionally heavy songs. Her main inspiration comes from home: the magical mountains and clouded weather of Norway. In a recent interview, Aurora claims there’s something magical about it, that reminds her of Narnia (my dream was to live in Narnia! Should I move to Norway? I’ll ask her some tips…)

Her voice is soothing yet, somehow, piercing. It’s impossible not to listen, it’s impossible not to feel its relevance. In a world full of normality, Miss Aksnes is a refresh to sore eyes (or, in this case, ears). Listening to her is like entering a mythical and mysterious world, a safe space where you can think about your life, relate to the things being sang and have a friendly shoulder to rely on. Aurora herself is art; is poetry.

Her career may not have started that long ago, she may still be young and a bit nervous when it comes to go on stage and talk to the audience, but she is like a miracle. Like something you’ve been needing for too long but didn’t know.

In her tracks, that’s what you’re going to find: honest lyrics and fresh beats.
