“THE CINEMA MUST NOT LIVE ON MOVIES ALONE, BUT ON GOOD MUSIC TOO.”

Think the cinema is only to watch films? Well, this article may change your mind...

Picture this: It’s Sunday afternoon and boredom has you under its spell; to break its curse, you decide to go to the cinema, watch a movie, and escape reality for two hours. There you are, already satisfied with your latest life choice, the motion picture is all you expected and more. Suddenly, something unusual happens: what was already great becomes even better. It’s like someone up above really likes you and decides to give you a pleasant gift: a brilliant song (one you’ve never heard before) starts to be played.

So what do you do? Get distracted, ignore the film and start frantically hunting the track’s name down or finish watching the movie and look for it later? Well, for me, when something like this happens I do a bit of both, it is a mixture of getting up of the chair and sitting back again, and of typing “movie X soundtrack” on the phone, while looking at the big screen in front of me, which usually doesn’t work out well, as I end up typing “moird A sxsnutjrckinstead.

This very situation happened to me one of these days, while I was watching the full-of-adrenaline Nerve. During a scene where the main characters are crossing a bridge, it starts playing:

Now, not to sound dramatic (although I really am), but my first reaction while listening this was “whoa, whoa Mister! What do you think you’re doing with my ears?” and, even though the lady on the seat next to mine hasn’t approved much my drama skills, I did not even have the time to apologise. Why you may ask? Well, I was too busy typing on my phone, while trying to concentrate on the film and calming down, all at the same time; because this is what good music does to us: it excites us and makes us want to jump all around.

Nerve has proven to be one of my best cinematographic experiences, not only because of its engaging storyline but also because of its amazing soundtrack, some of my all-time favourites (Halsey, Walla, and our Artist of The Week: BØRNS) were found there. So, I know this is highly unlikely but (miracles happen sometimes) if any of the responsible for Nerve’s soundtrack is reading this right now: MY DEEPEST THANK YOU!

This week, we’ll talk about the interesting and talented Børns, who got even Taylor Swift mother’s attention, making her recommend him to her daughter in 2015.

Garrett Clark Borns is originally from Grand Haven, Michigan, US. He was born on January 7th, 1992 and since he was a child, he already showed his humongous creativity and artistic talent. At the age of 10, he was already a professional magician, “Garrett the Great” and even performed at parties and got paid for it.

Three years later, he won his first award. Not yet in music, but in visual arts. His drawings made him win the Gold Key Award and a college scholarship of $8,000 at Kendall College of Art and Design offered by the National Scholastic Art Awards.

During his teens, Børns also got interested and involved with film-making and music. The last one, however, seems to have grabbed more of his attention as he went on to take classes in classical piano and jazz at community colleges.

His musical career gave its first steps in 2012, when alongside drummer Scott Pellegrom and guitarist Kevin Kozel he formed The Garrett Borns Trio. Not much information about them is available, although they did together an EP called A Dream Between that was mastered by John Mayer.

In 2013, Børns decided to start a solo career, as simply Garrett Borns. His life changed completely: he moved from New York to Los Angeles and co-wrote the success “10,000 Emerald Pools” with the producer Jack Kennedy. The song got the attention of Interscope Records that one year later signed him and released his debut solo EP Candy.

In an interview, Børns explained that later on, he decided to change his artistic name because it was “easier to find” and more unique. From 2015 onwards he took part in many huge festivals such as Lollapalooza, Coachella and Pitchfork.

His discography is currently made of the two EPs mentioned before, two studio albums: Dopamine (2015) and Blue Madonna (2018), and two live albums released in 2016: Live on KCRWÂ’S Morning – Becomes Eclectic and Spotify Sessions.

He is also known for his unique style, wearing crop-tops and nail polishes during his live performances. He’s been considered a fashion icon, being invited to attend many fashion events and leading him even to form a partnership with Gucci.

When a song is too good, it seems almost impossible not to feel a warmth spread on your heart, and smile not to creep on your face. You sit there, paralyzed, mesmerised, staring at the ceiling (or maybe the wall), like you were the only person in the world, feeling like you’re part of something important. That’s the power of music. That’s when you know that a song is special and that’s what I feel whenever Garrett Borns starts to sing his well-structured tracks with a super controlled yet powerful voice. Let his joyous performance thrill you too!
