"TOO MUCH EGO WILL KILL YOUR TALENT"

Named after the short version of this popular expression, the Brazilian hard rock/stoner rock band Ego Kill Talent invites “for a reflection of the ego, which is a common ingredient in the artistic universe”, accordingly to their website.

When you have a powerful sound, it is indispensable that you also have a powerful name. The name of a band marks its identity, its goals and can really determine if one will be successful or not.

Full of strong guitar chords and experienced musicians, Ego Kill Talent appears as one of the main Brazilian rock bands of actuality, having toured not only on its country of origin but throughout Europe and in a nearby future on North America.

Come learn more about the group and the outstanding concert they gave last Sunday (25th February), supporting Queens of The Stone Age and Foo Fighters on their Latin American tour.

Ego Kill Talent has began to be formed in São Paulo, in 2014, when Theo van der Loo (guitar/bass), Raphael Miranda(drums/bass), Jean Dolabella (drums/guitar), Jonathan Correa (vocals) and Estevam Romera (guitar/bass), former members of the bands Udora, Sepultura, Reação em Cadeia and Sayowa started to jam together and realised they had a lot in common musically.

With a lot of ideas blossoming, Ego Kill Talent soon released their first EP, “Sublimated”, in 2015. The EP has 3 tracks (4 if we count the exposed version of the eponymous single Sublimated) and was recorded at Family Mob Studios, which was founded by Jean Dolabella and Estevam Romera.

By 2016, their second EP “Still Here” was released, which marked their growth as a band, as they took part in many important festivals, including Lollapalooza Brasil. At the same year, the band would have the formation it has nowadays, with Estevam Romera leaving the band and Niper Boaventura (guitar/bass) taking his place.

In 2017, the band released their first LP, called “Ego Kill Talent” with brilliant songs such as Just to Call You Mine, Last Ride and We All. 2017 was also the year in which the band released the track “Collision Course” alongside Far From Alaska.

Since then, they have been working towards their second album (still unnamed) and are touring the world; some of their next concert dates are at Download Paris, France on June 17th and at Graspop, Belgium on June 24th.

What is it like watching them live?
Summing up in one word: unforgettable. I had two opportunities to see them perform (one at the Sunset Stage in Rock in Rio 2017 and the other as an opening act for Foo Fighters and Queens of The Stone Age in 2018), and trust me: in none of them they failed to deliver, especially the last one.

Jonathan (the band’s frontman) has an incredible vocal ability and is really charismatic with the public, he talked about how 3 years ago he was one of us, standing in the crowd watching the Foo Fighters’ concert and being their fan.

The band, in general, presents itself in a very confident way, which, of course, may be due to its members' vast experience in the field; however, when we remind ourselves that they are still a newly formed band, it is pretty remarkable of them being able to do that. Their confidence becomes obvious by the quality of their sound, which is impeccable, making it seem like we are hearing an album and not them live. It wouldn’t surprise me if in some years now, were they the headliners in a huge stadium.

An interesting fact about them is that in each song, the group’s members play different instruments, changing them amongst themselves. The only thing that stays the same throughout the performance is the vocals. They said in some interviews that this helps them to keep things fresh and creative during rehearsals, composition sessions and concerts.

The group meshes well and has a great energy, which attracts the public’s attention like a magnet (even though they were not the main attraction of the day, it was possible to see a lot of people singing their songs, interacting with them, having a great time and arriving earlier to catch their set, that started at 6:30 p.m.). The downside of their performance is that it came to an end and lasted only 30 minutes, a shame indeed.

A dynamic and engaging concert where even the loudest screams seemed to be controlled and only made the audience want more. We definitely hope to see more of them in the future (preferably with 2-hour sets, if we’re not asking too much…)
