OH WONDER-FULL!

As one of their songs says “I’m a little bit lost without you”, this would be us without them. Meet Oh Wonder, a young British duo which is the talk of the hour.”

Ever since I discovered them, Oh Wonder for me is short for Wonder-full. Whether you are having a rough day or a happy one, what else can be more fulfilling than piano melodies with soothing vocals? If synth-pop, indie is your ship, keep your ears plugged in our Artist of The Week.

Oh Wonder’s history starts approximately in 2011 when Josephine Vander Gucht was introduced to Anthony West by some friends. At the time, she conducted her solo project, called LAYLA and he was the vocalist of the band Futures.

Soon enough, they became good friends, which culminated in him producing some of her work. As time went by, seeing that they have a lot in common musically (both classical trained multi-instrumentalists), they came up with the idea for Oh Wonder.

The project was released on Soundcloud and initially intended to showcase both Anthony’s and Josephine’s songwriting abilities. They both sang on it so that people could see that the song worked as much for female pitches as for male. Their plan was that other artists liked it and hired Josephine or Anthony to write new songs for them.

What neither of them expected was that their first hit “Body Gold” would get more than 100,000 plays in only three days. It surprised them so much that they thought something was wrong with Soundcloud, however, when released the second song and the same happened, they realized people were actually enjoying their music.

From this moment on, Oh Wonder’s goal had changed: they now wanted to connect with their growing network of fans. Which led them to have an outstanding idea: they would release one song a month, and in 2015 put it all together and release an album, which is exactly what they did.

During the years of 2014-2015, every month, Oh Wonder released a new song, which kept fans more and more interested in them and attracted new ones. 4th September 2015, Oh Wonder, the eponymous debut album was released, cementing Oh Wonder’s increasing popularity.

It sold more than 500,000 copies and was certified silver in the UK and gold in both Canada and Russia. To commemorate the album’s release and success (amongst critics and the public), the duo started a worldwide tour that covered the UK, France, Denmark, Sweden and more.

In July 2017, the band released their second album, called “Ultralife” and are currently touring the world.

Since the beginning, Oh Wonder's components wanted to remain anonymous, as for them “is the music what matters”. Although they have not been successful at that, one thing still hasn’t changed and accordingly to them, won’t change anytime soon: the place where they produce their songs and albums. They have always made (and still make) all their music in their own studio, which is located at their home.

If you love soothing melodies, well-written lyrics and breath-taking harmonies, Oh Wonder’s songs are the ones for you. The voice of the duo blends so well that many times I caught myself thinking they were just one, and this is exactly how we feel throughout their songs: that they are one. The undeniable chemistry and complicity they emanate are a true bonus to their performance
